Can I use a Serial to USB or Parallel to USB adapter with my Star Micronics printer?

You are here:

As a leading POS printer manufacturer, Star Micronics provides support for Serial, Parallel, USB, Powered USB, and Ethernet printing*.

Star Micronics cannot support the use of adapters with our printers for two main reasons:

  1. There are no clearly defined standards for creating X to Y adapters
  2. There are far too many adapter manufacturers in the marketplace to test every one

To ensure your printer will print properly and at the correct speed, Star Micronics urges you to utilize the correct cable. We have taken steps to make connection compatibility easier on the end-user. Many Star printer models support swappable interfaces, allowing the user to purchase just the interface should he or she wish to change connections in the future. Star Micronics has also signed up reliable distribution partners that carry all connection cables for Star printers.

All serial POS printers require a specific printer serial cable for communication. This cable is typically not sold in general hardware stores, but can easily be obtained from an approved Star Micronics Distributor.

Parallel printers require a Centronics Parallel cable for communication. Unlike serial, this parallel cable can easily be sourced in a general hardware store or obtained from an approved Star Micronics Distributor.

* Check your printer model’s specifications to see which interfaces are supported.
