Weights and Measures Information – Delaware
Introduction
This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Delaware, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
Delaware follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.
Commercial weighing and measuring devices used in Delaware must meet applicable state requirements and are subject to inspection by the Delaware DDA.
Commercial scales must have a valid NTEP Certificate of Conformance and meet applicable requirements of NIST Handbook 44.
Calibration
A Delaware Registered Serviceperson or Registered Service Agency is required to install, calibrate, repair and place a commercial scale into service.
When placing a scale into service, the registered serviceperson or service agency must submit the required Placed in Service Report (PISR) to the Delaware DDA within 24 hours.
The scale may be used commercially after being properly placed into service while awaiting inspection by the Delaware DDA Weights and Measures Section.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales are inspected by the Delaware DDA within a 12-month period, or according to an alternative inspection schedule established by the department, to verify accuracy and compliance.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
