Registration

Illinois follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable laws and regulations.

A registered service company or serviceperson should be contacted to install and prepare a new commercial scale for use.

A registered serviceperson in good standing may place the scale into service, allowing it to be used commercially until it is tested by the Illinois Department of Agriculture or an authorized city sealer.

Calibration

A registered service company or serviceperson is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.

After the scale is placed into service, it is subject to testing by the Illinois Department of Agriculture Bureau of Weights and Measures or, where applicable, an authorized city sealer.

Maintenance

Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.

Commercial scales are subject to inspection by the Illinois Department of Agriculture or, where applicable, an authorized city sealer.

Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
