Weights and Measures Information – Maine

This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Maine, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
Maine follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.
Commercial weighing and measuring devices used in Maine must meet applicable NTEP requirements and are subject to inspection by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF).
Maine licenses service technicians who install, service, repair or calibrate commercial weighing and measuring devices. Licensed service technicians may place devices into commercial service.
Calibration
A Maine registered dealer or repairer is required to install, calibrate, repair and place a commercial scale into service.
Maine requires dealers and repairers performing this work to be registered with the State Sealer.
After a scale is newly installed, repaired or adjusted, the serviceperson must submit a Placed in Service Report (PISR) to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF). The report also requires a current NTEP Certificate of Conformance for newly installed equipment.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales are subject to inspection by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) to verify accuracy and compliance.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
