Weights and Measures Information – Maryland
Introduction
This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Maryland, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
Maryland follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.
All scales used in commercial transactions in Maryland must be registered annually with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA).
Commercial weighing and measuring devices manufactured or installed in Maryland after October 1, 1992 must meet applicable NTEP requirements.

Calibration
A Maryland registered service agency or service technician is required to install, calibrate, repair and place a commercial scale into service.
After a scale is newly installed, serviced or repaired, the registered service agency must submit a Placed in Service Report (PISR) to the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA).
Maryland’s form includes the device’s NTEP Certificate of Conformance number and details of the work performed.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales are subject to inspection by the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to verify accuracy and compliance.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
