Weights and Measures Information – Massachusetts

Registration
Massachusetts follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable laws and regulations.
Commercial scales are subject to inspection and sealing by the Massachusetts Division of Standards or the local Sealer of Weights and Measures responsible for the municipality where the scale is used.
Contact your local Sealer or the Division of Standards to determine the requirements before placing a new commercial scale into service.
Massachusetts law requires commercial weighing and measuring devices to be inspected annually. Which authority performs that inspection depends on the municipality.
Calibration
A qualified scale service company is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
The Massachusetts Division of Standards or local Sealer of Weights and Measures tests the scale for accuracy and seals the device when it meets applicable requirements.
Both state compliance officers and municipal Sealers are authorized to test, inspect and seal commercial weighing and measuring devices.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales in Massachusetts are inspected annually by the Division of Standards or the appropriate local Sealer of Weights and Measures.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
