Weights and Measures Information – Michigan
Introduction
This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Michigan, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
Michigan follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.
Commercial scales must have a valid NTEP Certificate of Conformance and must be tested and approved before being used commercially. This may be completed by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD) or a Michigan Registered Service Company.
Calibration
A Michigan Registered Service Agency or Registered Serviceperson is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
When a scale is installed, returned to commercial service, repaired after rejection or otherwise requires placement back into service, the registered serviceperson must properly test the scale and complete the required Placed in Service Report (PISR).
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales are subject to inspection by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD) to verify accuracy and compliance.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
