Weights and Measures Information – New Hampshire

Introduction

This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of New Hampshire, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration

New Hampshire follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.

Commercial scales used in New Hampshire must be licensed by the NHDAMF Division of Weights and Measures before being used commercially. Before a device can be licensed, it must be inspected, tested and certified by a Division inspector or a registered New Hampshire service technician.

Commercial scales must have a valid NTEP Certificate of Conformance and meet applicable requirements of NIST Handbook 44.

Calibration

A New Hampshire-registered service technician is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.

The registered service technician must complete a Placed in Service/Inspection Report Form when installing, servicing, repairing, testing, calibrating or certifying a commercial scale. The report must be submitted to the NHDAMF Division of Weights and Measures within five days of the date of service.

The scale must be tested and certified before it can be licensed for commercial use. A certification stamp is applied when the device meets New Hampshire requirements.

Maintenance

Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.

Commercial scales are subject to annual inspection and testing by the NHDAMF Division of Weights and Measures or a registered New Hampshire service technician to verify accuracy and compliance.

Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
