Registration
New Jersey follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.
All weighing and measuring devices used for commercial purposes in New Jersey must be registered annually with the New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures.
A separate registration application is required for each business location where commercial devices are used.
Calibration
A New Jersey-licensed repairer is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
Commercial scales in New Jersey must be installed, repaired and adjusted by a person or business properly licensed and registered with the New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) to perform this work. New Jersey defines repair work to include the construction, repair, alteration, installation or adjustment of weighing and measuring devices used in commerce.
After installation or repair, commercial scales are subject to inspection and testing by state, county or municipal Weights and Measures officials to verify accuracy and compliance with applicable requirements.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales are subject to inspection by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General (OAG), Division of Consumer Affairs, Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) and local Weights and Measures officials to verify accuracy and compliance.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
