Weights and Measures Information – New Mexico
Introduction
This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of New Mexico, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
New Mexico follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.
Commercial weighing and measuring devices must be approved for commercial use and placed into service by the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) or a registered service technician before being used commercially.
New Mexico does not require commercial device owners to complete a separate annual device registration.
Calibration
A New Mexico registered service technician is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
After placing a commercial scale into service, the registered service technician must submit the required Placed in Service Report (PISR) to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA).
Commercial scales are subject to inspection by NMDA to verify accuracy and compliance with applicable requirements.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.

Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
