Weights and Measures Information – Ohio
Introduction
This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Ohio, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
Ohio follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.
Commercial scales must meet applicable legal-for-trade and NTEP requirements before being used commercially.
Ohio requires annual device permits for certain commercial scales, including livestock, vehicle and railway scales. Other commercial scales are not subject to the annual device permit requirement.
Calibration
An Ohio registered serviceperson or registered service agency is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
Registered servicepersons may place newly installed devices into service and restore rejected devices to service.
A Placed in Service Report (PISR) is required for each newly installed device placed into service and each rejected device restored to service. The report must be submitted to the Ohio Department of Agriculture within seven days.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales are subject to inspection by the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and local weights and measures officials to verify accuracy and compliance.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
