Weights and Measures Information – Pennsylvania
Introduction
This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Pennsylvania, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
Washington follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable laws and regulations.
Commercial scales must meet applicable Pennsylvania Weights and Measures requirements before being used commercially.
A registered Seller/Installer/Repairperson (SIR) must notify the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture when installing a commercial scale.
Calibration
A Pennsylvania-registered Seller/Installer/Repairperson (SIR) is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
The SIR must submit a Weights and Measures Installation/Repair Notification Form to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the appropriate Regional Supervisor following installation.
Pennsylvania requires SIRs working with commercial scales to use certified test weights and test loads appropriate for the devices they service.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Pennsylvania Weights and Measures conducts inspections of commercial scales throughout the state. Some counties and municipalities operate their own Weights and Measures inspection programs.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
