Weights and Measures Information – Quebec

Registration
Commercial scales used in Quebec must be approved for use in trade by Measurement Canada.
Before a scale is used commercially, it must be examined by a Measurement Canada inspector or other authorized inspector and certified as meeting the requirements of the federal Weights and Measures Act and Regulations.
Certain commercial scales are also subject to mandatory periodic examinations based on the industry in which they are used.
Calibration
A qualified scale service company is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
Before being placed into service, the scale must be inspected and certified by a Measurement Canada Authorized Service Provider (ASP).
The ASP verifies that the scale meets applicable requirements and applies the required examination markings.

Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales may be subject to mandatory periodic examinations based on the industry and type of trade in which they are used.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
