Weights and Measures Information – Rhode Island
Introduction
This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Rhode Island, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
Rhode Island follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.
Rhode Island does not require commercial scales to be registered or licensed with the state. Instead, commercial scales must be tested and sealed by a Certified Sealer of Weights and Measures before being placed into commercial service.
Commercial scales must have a valid NTEP Certificate of Conformance, meet applicable requirements of NIST Handbook 44 and be properly sealed before being used commercially.
Calibration
A Certified Sealer of Weights and Measures is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
Commercial scales must be tested and sealed once every six months. If a scale does not meet applicable requirements, it must be adjusted or repaired before it can be approved for commercial use.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Commercial scales are subject to inspection by a Certified Sealer of Weights and Measures to verify accuracy and compliance. Rhode Island requires scales to be tested and sealed every six months.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
