Weights and Measures Information – Texas

Introduction

This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Texas, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration

Texas requires commercial weighing devices to comply with NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.

Commercial scales must meet the applicable requirements of NIST Handbook 44. A valid NTEP Certificate of Conformance helps demonstrate compliance.

Businesses must register commercial weighing devices annually with TDA. TDA also oversees inspections to verify accuracy and compliance.

Calibration

A TDA-licensed service technician employed by a licensed service company is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.

The licensed service company must complete and submit a Licensed Service Company Service Report to TDA within 10 days of placing the scale into service.

Once placed into service, the scale is subject to official inspection and approval by TDA.

Maintenance

Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.

Commercial scales are subject to inspection and testing by TDA to verify accuracy and compliance.

Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
