Weights and Measures Information – Washington
Introduction
This article provides information for using and maintaining an NTEP-certified scale for commercial applications in the state of Washington, including registration, installation, calibration, inspection and maintenance requirements.

Registration
Washington follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable laws and regulations.
Commercial scales must be registered annually through the Washington State Department of Revenue Business Licensing Service before being used commercially.
Failure to properly register a commercial scale may result in penalties.
Calibration
A Washington-registered service company is required to install and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.
The service company submits a Placed-In-Service Report.
Washington Weights and Measures inspects the scale and applies an approval seal when it meets applicable requirements.
Maintenance
Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Washington Weights and Measures periodically inspects and tests commercial scales to verify accuracy and continued compliance.
Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to penalties.
