Registration

Wisconsin follows the requirements of NIST Handbook 44, along with applicable state laws and regulations.

Commercial scales must have a valid NTEP Certificate of Conformance and meet applicable requirements of NIST Handbook 44.

Commercial weighing devices are subject to state or local weights and measures inspections, depending on the municipality.

Calibration

A DATCP-licensed service company with a certified service technician is required to install, inspect and calibrate the scale before it is used commercially.

The service company must prepare a written test report documenting the work performed and provide a copy to the scale owner or operator within 10 days.

Once properly installed, tested and sealed, the scale may be used commercially, subject to any additional local inspection requirements.

Maintenance

Have the scale regularly serviced and calibrated to maintain accuracy.

Commercial scales are subject to inspection and testing by DATCP or the appropriate local weights and measures authority to verify accuracy and compliance.

Scales that fail inspection may be removed from service until corrected and may be subject to enforcement action.
