How to Enable a Buzzer on Windows

Introduction

This application note provides instructions for enabling and testing a printer-driven buzzer in Windows.

Supported Printers: All Star Desktop Thermal and Impact Printers
Supported Buzzers: BU01-24-A Ticket Alarm, mC-Sound
Supported Environments: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7

Before you begin

Star desktop printers can be configured to activate a buzzer connected to the accessory port after each transaction when a receipt is printed. Alternatively, the buzzer can be disabled if it is controlled by the POS software. These steps are intended for use when installing and setting up a buzzer on a Star Micronics printer.

Important! Ensure that the printer is installed, configured and working on the Windows device.

Important! The printer must first be powered OFF before plugging the buzzer in.

Enable a Buzzer with the futurePRNT Driver

1. Power the printer OFF. Connect the buzzer to the printer’s “DK” port and power the printer ON.

2. Click the Windows/Start Menu icon and open Settings.

3. Click Bluetooth & devices and select Printers & scanners.

4. Select the printer and click Printer Properties.

5. Select the Device Settings tab.

6. Under Installable Options, open the Peripheral Unit Type menu and select Buzzer.

7. Open Peripheral Unit 1 menu and select Document Bottom.

8. Open the Buzzer 1 – One Time menu and select 200 milliseconds or higher.

Note: Anything below 200 milliseconds will result in no sound.

9. Click Apply to confirm the changes.

Note: If “Repeat” is changed to anything greater than 1 then “Buzzer 1 – Off Time” must be changed to represent the time between each buzzer sounding.

10. To test, select the General tab and click Print Test Page. This will print a test receipt and the buzzer will sound. Click OK to close the Printer Properties.

Congratulations! You have successfully enabled a Buzzer with your printer on Windows.

Enable a Buzzer with the StarPRNT Intelligence and Star Windows Software Drivers

1. Power the printer OFF. Connect the buzzer to the printer’s DK port and power the printer ON.

2. Click the Windows/Start Menu icon and open Settings.

3. Click Bluetooth & devices and select Printers & scanners.

4. Select the printer and click Printer Properties.

5. Select the Device Settings tab.

6. Expand the Peripheral Unit 1 menu.

7. Click the Type cascade menu and select Buzzer. Click the Timing cascade menu and select Document Bottom.

8. Click the Buzzer cascade menu and change On Time to 200 milliseconds or higher.

Note: Anything below 200 milliseconds will result in no sound.

9. Click Apply to confirm the changes.

10. To test, select the General tab and click Print Test Page. This will print a test receipt and the buzzer will sound. Click OK to close the Printer Properties.

Congratulations! You have successfully enabled a Buzzer with your printer on Windows.
