How to Reset a Portable Printer’s PIN on Windows

Introduction

This application note provides instructions for resetting the Bluetooth PIN for Star Micronics portable printers.

Supported Printers: SM-L200, SM-L300, SM-S220i, SM-S230i, SM-T300/300i, SM-T400i
Supported Interfaces: Bluetooth
Supported Environments: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7

Before you begin

These steps are meant to be used if the previously established Bluetooth PIN or default PIN of 1234 do not work when attempting to the pair the printer via Bluetooth. This process requires the utilization of the printer’s included communication cable (Serial or USB).

What cable should I use?

SM-S220i, SM-S300, SM-T400i

These models connect via a Serial cable. *A compatible Serial port is required on the Windows device.

SM-L200, SM-L300, SM-S230i

These models utilize a USB cable connection.

Portable Printer Utility

1. Install StarPRNT for Portable Driver

The most current version of the StarPRNT for Portable driver can be found HERE

1. Click “Download” on either the Full or EXE version. Select “I Agree” and click “Download”.

Note: The Full driver download includes the printer/software manuals while the EXE version does not. For this application note, the Full version is used.

2. Locate the downloaded zip folder (commonly located in the Downloads folder). Right-click on the zip folder and select “Extract All…”.

Note: If the EXE file was downloaded, simply double-click the application to start the installation process and skip to Step 5.

3. Open the newly extracted folder and navigate to the “setup” folder. Double-click on the Setup application.

4. Allow the app to make changes to your device and Click “Next”.

5. Select “I Accept” then click “Next”.

6. Click “Typical”.

7. Click “Install”. Star Cloud Services can also be launched by checking the box.

8. The installer completes the installation.

9. Click “Finish”.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed the StarPRNT for Portable driver on Windows.

2. Reset PIN in Portable Printer Utility

1. Connect the printer to the Windows device using the printer cable then power the printer ON. The LCD screen should now display UART Mode.

2. Click the Windows/Start Menu icon then search for and open Portable Printer Utility.

3. Select “Troubleshooting”.

4. Select “Reset PIN code” and click “Run Test”.

5. After the reset is complete, a confirmation will print.

Congratulations! You have successfully reset the Bluetooth PIN or your portable printer.

Bluetooth Reset Tool

To request the Star Micronics Bluetooth Reset Tool, click HERE

1. Connect the printer to the Windows device using the printer cable then power the printer ON. The LCD screen should now display UART Mode.

2. Click the Windows/Start Menu icon. Search for StarMicronics Bluetooth Reset Tool and open it.

3. The tool will automatically detect and populate the printer’s connection details which must not be changed. Click “Reset”.

Note: Do not disconnect or power off the printer during the reset process.

4. The tool will process the PIN key reset. Click “OK” after the process is complete.

Congratulations! You have successfully reset the Bluetooth PIN or your Star Micronics portable printer.
