How to Change the Emulation on Star TSP100 Series Printers

Introduction

This application note provides instructions for changing the printer language emulation on Star TSP100 Series printers from StarLine mode to ESC/POS mode.

Supported Printers: TSP100, TSP100ECO, TSP100III
Supported Interfaces: Bluetooth, Ethernet (LAN), USB, Wi-Fi
Supported Environments: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7

Before you begin

Important! Ensure that the printer is installed, configured and working on the Windows device.

Note: While these instructions were written using the TSP100IIIW as an example, this document applies to all models indicated above.

When should I change the emulation of my printer?

Switching to the correct emulation ensures compatibility with software applications and POS systems that rely on ESC/POS commands. To confirm what emulation is required by your software, contact your point-of-sale provider.

Text and Printing Settings

1. Click the Windows/Start Menu icon. Search for Configuration Utility TSP100 and open it. Allow it to make changes to your device.

2. Select ESC/POS Mode Emulation and click “OK”.

3. Select “General Settings” in the left menu bar.

Note: The Default Text Settings and Default Printer Settings sections contain settings relevant to print out appearance.

4. Choose the desired Code Page.

5. Choose the desired Font type:

Standard – Sets standard ESC/POS font
Large – Sets a rounder, bulkier looking font

6. Choose a setting to add extra space (in dot units) to the right of each character. Extra spacing may improve appearance when the font type is set to Large.

7. Choose the number of characters per line.

42 Characters – The standard for ESC/POS Mode
48 Characters – The standard for Star Line Mode

8. Choose the resolution pitch.

Star Standard – Uses Star Line Mode’s standard resolution. Characters are smaller compared to native ESC/POS printers, so the receipt portion is smaller and the right margin is larger.
ESC/POS Compatible – Margins and line widths are the same as a typical ESC/POS printer. Characters are the same size as with Star Line Mode, but padding is added so that the print area occupies the same areas as on a native ESC/POS printer.

9. Click “Apply Changes”.

Congratulations! You have successfully configured the ESC/POS settings for the TSP100 Series printer.

Print Job Routing

For ESC/POS emulation, it is necessary to enable Print Job Routing to ensure printouts are parsed accurately. If the box is left unchecked, some applications may use Star Line Mode parsing, resulting in corrupted printing.

1. Select “Print Job Routing”.

2. Select “Enable ESC/POS Routing” and click “Apply Changes”.

Congratulations! You have successfully configured the TSP100 for ESC/POS-styled print outs.
