How to Install a Legacy USB Printer on Windows Using the Inbox Driver

Introduction

This application note provides instructions for installing the Windows Inbox Driver on Windows for use with legacy USB printers that no longer have supported drivers.

Supported Printers: SP500, TSP100 (Alternate), TSP600, TSP650, TSP700, TSP800, TSP1000
Supported Interfaces: USB
Supported Environments: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7

Before you begin

Important! New installations require two steps: 1) Install the Inbox driver and 2) Add the printer to Windows. These two separate steps are explained below.

Important! Ensure that the printer’s USB cable is not connected to your Windows device until after the driver has been fully installed.

Note: These instructions were written using Windows 11. If you are using an earlier version of Windows some steps may differ.

Install the Inbox Driver

The most current version of the Inbox driver can be found HERE

1. Click the link above then select “Download”. Select “I Accept” and click Download.

2. Locate the downloaded folder (commonly located in the Downloads folder). Right-click on the folder and select “Extract All…”.

3. Open the newly extracted folder, then open PrinterDriver > 32bit or 64bit, whichever is applicable.

Note: Most current Windows systems operate on x64, to confirm your OS version open the System Information of your PC.

4. Right-click on the prnst001.inf file and select “Install”.

Note: Depending on your version of Windows, you may need to select “Show more options” to access the Install option.

5. Allow the app to make changes to your device and the driver will have been installed.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed the Inbox driver on Windows.

Add the Printer to Windows

Note: While these instructions were written using the TSP700 as an example, this document applies to all models indicated above.

1. Click the Windows/Start Menu icon and open Settings.

2. Click Bluetooth & devices and select “Printers & scanners”.

3. Select “Add Printer”.

4. Select “The printer that I want isn’t listed”.

5. Choose Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and click “Next”.

6. Choose an existing port, this will be dependent on the interface the printer uses. Then click “Next”.

LPT1 – Parallel
COM – Bluetooth/Serial
USB00X – USB

7. Click “Have Disk…”.

8. Click “Browse…” and navigate to PrinterDriver > 32/64bit and select the prnst001.inf file. Then click “OK”.

Note: The file can be found in the downloaded StarInboxDriver folder (commonly located in the Downloads folder). Most current Windows systems operate on x64, to confirm your OS version open the System Information of your PC.

9. Choose your printer from the list.

10. Choose a printer name and click “Next”.

11. Click “Print a test page” and confirm it printed. Click “Finish”.

12. Navigate back to Devices and Printers and the printer will now appear.

Note: It is possible the printer will show up under the Unspecified tab. It should not prevent the printer from use by a POS.

Congratulations! You have successfully added a printer using the Inbox driver on Windows.
