How to Assign a USB-ID to a USB Printer

Introduction

This application note provides instructions for configuring a USB printer by assigning a USB-ID (serial number) using the USB Serial Number Tool.

Before you begin

Important! Ensure that the printer is installed, configured and working on the Windows device.

When should I assign a USB-ID?

In most cases, assigning a USB-ID is not necessary or recommended, as Star Micronics USB printers are designed for Plug-and-Play setup. However, there may be specific scenarios—such as resolving device conflicts on Windows—where assigning a USB-ID can be beneficial.

Driver Association: During a USB printer setup on Windows, the OS assigns the wrong driver to the printer. The USB-ID prevents Windows from automatically assigning an incorrect driver.

Point-of-sale Association: Some point-of-sale companies require a specific brand or model of printer. The USB-ID enables software to verify and configure the correct settings automatically.

Assign a USB-ID

1. Click the Windows/Start Menu icon and open Settings.

2. Click “Bluetooth & devices” and select “Printers & scanners”.

3. Select the printer and click “Printer Properties”.

4. Select the “Ports” tab. Uncheck “Enable bidirectional support” if currently checked.

5. Click the Windows/Start Menu icon and open the USB Serial Number tool.

6. Select “Printer”.

Note: If the printer is in Vendor class, select “Port” and choose the appropriate COM port assigned to the printer.

7. Choose the printer you want to assign a new USB-ID to and click “OK”.

8. Check “Enable” and assign a serial number of your choice. Click “OK”.

Note: The USB-ID can contain up to 8 characters using numbers, text or a combination of both.

9. Confirm the Serial Number and click “OK” to begin the process.

10. Once the process is complete, click “Exit” and power the printer off.

Note: Once the printer is powered back on and connected to a USB port, it will install as normal. If the printer is plugged into a different port, it will not be reinstalled.

Congratulations! You have successfully assigned a USB-ID to a Star USB printer.

Remove a USB-ID

To remove a USB-ID, repeat the above steps until Step 8. Leave the Serial Number section blank and continue to Step 9.
